Wood pallet pricing ranges (new, recycled, custom)
US wood pallet pricing anchors to the CME softwood lumber front-month futures contract plus freight, treatment, and grade adjustments. The published commercial-buyer ranges below reflect typical delivered pricing for mid-volume accounts (50-500 pallets per order) in the Southeast and national freight footprint. One-off small orders run higher per unit; standing weekly programs run lower.
For a GMA 48x40 new pallet, the typical delivered range is $9 to $22 per pallet depending on region and grade. For Grade-A recycled 48x40, $5 to $9 per pallet. For Grade-B recycled, $3 to $6 per pallet. For custom-sized new pallets (36x36, 40x40, 42x42, 48x48, 60x40, 84x48), prices climb linearly with lumber usage - typically $20 to $65 per pallet for small-to-medium custom builds. For heavy-duty custom (5,000 to 15,000 lb load class), $30 to $150 per pallet.
For ISPM-15 heat-treated export pallets, add $0.75 to $2.00 per pallet over the equivalent domestic pricing (depending on origin yard and treatment lot size). For plastic pallets (rotomolded or injection), $35 to $120 per unit; typically used in food, pharma, and automotive returnable programs where cycle count justifies the higher per-unit cost.
What drives wood pallet pricing
Lumber index
CME softwood lumber front-month contract is the dominant price driver for new builds. A 15% futures move translates roughly to a 7-10% pass-through on new pallet pricing within 2-4 weeks. Random Lengths Southern Yellow Pine index tracks regional spot pricing (used by Florida and Southeast yards). We publish our pricing anchored to one or both indexes with a cap-and-collar for standing weekly programs.
Freight lane
Pallet freight is distance-and-weight based. From a Florida origin to Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina destinations: typically $0.80 to $1.40 per pallet freight add. To Northeast or Midwest: $2.00 to $3.50 per pallet. Fuel surcharges add 5-18% depending on DOE diesel index.
Species and grade
Southern yellow pine is the dominant Southeast species (lower cost, available locally). Douglas fir is the heavy-duty standard (higher strength, higher cost - 10-20% premium). Hardwood (oak, maple) runs 2-4x softwood for high-abuse applications. Grade A recycled is customer-facing-clean; Grade B is repaired or lightly damaged (same structural capacity but cosmetic).
Program commit vs spot
Standing weekly program (50+ pallets per week on a published schedule) typically beats spot pricing by 8-15%. The spread widens on volatile lumber-futures weeks.
ISPM-15 treatment
Heat-treatment + IPPC stamping adds $0.75-$2.00 per pallet. For export shipments this is required; for domestic shipments it is optional and typically not justified.
How we quote
Send us your target spec (pallet size, grade, treatment), weekly volume, ship-to state, and timing. We reply with a lane-specific quote within one business day. For standing programs we lock a 30 or 90 day cap-and-collar rate anchored to CME lumber futures - so your pricing predictability improves even in volatile markets.
For high-volume accounts (1,000+ pallets per week) we quote a program with yard-direct dispatch, dedicated inventory, and lane-matched freight optimization.

How much does a 48x40 GMA pallet cost in 2026?
A new GMA 48x40 pallet delivered in volume (50-500 pallets per order) typically runs $9 to $22 depending on origin yard, lumber-futures state, and freight lane. Grade A recycled 48x40 runs $5 to $9. For a lane-specific quote send us your ship-to state and quantity.
What is the difference between Grade A and Grade B recycled pallets?
Grade A recycled is cosmetically clean with original stringers, suitable for retail-facing or customer-facing loads. Grade B is repaired or lightly damaged (companion boards, plugs) but structurally equivalent to Grade A - same load rating, 30-50% lower cost. Grade B is standard for internal moves and one-way domestic shipments.
How much does an ISPM-15 heat-treated pallet cost?
The heat-treatment and IPPC stamping add $0.75 to $2.00 per pallet over the equivalent domestic grade pricing. ISPM-15 is required for any pallet crossing international borders (except US-Canada-Mexico internal moves with specific exemptions).
How does CME lumber futures affect pallet pricing?
CME softwood lumber front-month contract is the dominant price driver for new-build pallets. A 15% move in CME futures translates to roughly a 7-10% pass-through on new pallet pricing within 2-4 weeks. Our standing weekly program customers lock a cap-and-collar rate to protect against volatility.
What is the minimum order for US pallets?
Our commercial-buyer minimum is 50 pallets. Standing weekly program customers get better pricing per unit; one-time orders of 50 pallets quote at spot. For buyback (pallets we buy FROM you) the minimum is 250 pallets, single size only.
Are plastic pallets cheaper than wood?
Plastic pallets cost 3-10x per unit vs wood but last 25-300 cycles vs 1-50 for wood. For high-cycle returnable programs in food, pharma, and automotive, plastic cost-per-cycle is lower than wood. For single-use or low-cycle shipping, wood wins on economics.
What is the typical lead time for pallet delivery?
Same-day in 19 Florida same-day counties for orders by 2 PM EST. Next-day statewide in Florida. 1-6 day national freight for continental US via partner broker network. Emergency / storm-restoration dispatch runs 24/7 during Florida hurricane season.
How do you handle pallet buyback?
For sellers with 250+ pallets single-size we pick up at your yard, grade on-site, and pay by check or ACH within 7 days. We prefer Southern yellow pine 48x40 GMA, but accept all common commercial sizes. Minimum lot: 250 pallets.
What is the lumber-index cap-and-collar?
For standing weekly program customers we lock pricing against a published lumber index (CME softwood futures or Random Lengths SYP). Cap-and-collar sets a maximum and minimum pass-through - so your per-pallet cost cannot swing more than X% up or down within a 30 or 90 day window regardless of index moves.
Do you supply food-grade and pharma pallets?
Yes - food-grade (FSMA-compliant) pallets with specific species and treatment, and pharma-grade (48x42) pallets with foam-faced top deck for scratch-sensitive loads. Quote per spec on request.
