Wood spool and cable reel pricing (NEMA WC 26 standard sizes)
Wood cable reel pricing follows NEMA WC 26 standard sizes plus custom builds. The published ranges below are for new Grade-A build; Grade-A recycled for returnable pool programs typically runs 40-60% of new build. Pricing anchors to CME softwood lumber plus NEMA-published steel fastener costs plus freight.
A small telecom reel (24-30 inch flange) runs $35 to $75 delivered. A URD / distribution reel (36-48 inch flange) runs $85 to $160. A transmission reel (54-60 inch flange) runs $180 to $340. A heavy utility reel (72-84 inch flange) runs $320 to $650. Custom (96-inch flange and up, or specialty traverse) is quoted per drawing.
For returnable pool programs (utility, cable co-op, pool operator), Grade-A recycled reels at 40-60% of new build. The pool pays wear-and-replace at roughly 2-6% of inventory per 100 cycles depending on handling.
What drives wood spool pricing
Flange diameter
The largest cost driver. A 60-inch flange reel uses roughly 4x the lumber volume of a 30-inch flange reel. Price scales approximately with the square of the flange diameter.
Drum diameter and traverse
Smaller drum = more cable per reel but also more lumber in the drum staves. Longer traverse = more cable + more barrel-stave lumber. Custom specs typically run 10-25% above comparable standard sizes.
Species
Southern yellow pine is standard for most ISPM-15 export reels and general-purpose builds. Douglas fir runs 10-15% premium and is preferred for heavy-utility and high-abuse applications. Hardwood (oak) is specialty, 2-3x pine.
ISPM-15 stamping
For export reels (Jaxport Latin America, Port Miami Caribbean), add $0.50 to $2.00 per linear foot of flange (depending on treatment-batch size). Most export reels run $5-$25 of added stamp cost.
Flange marking and bolt pattern
For pool spec match (FPL pool, utility pool, cable manufacturer pool) we match the published pool spec exactly - flange marking, bolt pattern, head-plate thickness. Pool-matched builds run same base price with specification engineering amortized across the program.
How we quote wood spools
Send us flange diameter, drum diameter, traverse, species preference, quantity (one-time or weekly), ship-to state, and any ISPM-15 export requirement. Standard reply same business day. For returnable pool programs we quote the per-reel buy price AND the per-reel return credit so the economics are clear.
For storm-restoration and utility emergency work we dispatch inventory from the regional yard within hours of order - our Florida yard specifically pre-stages reel inventory during hurricane season.

How much does a 48-inch wood cable reel cost in 2026?
A new 48-inch flange wood reel in US-national freight footprint typically runs $85-$160 delivered in volume. Grade-A recycled runs $35-$95. Our Florida yard stocks standard NEMA WC 26 sizes for 1-3 day shipment to the Southeast; 5-10 day national freight.
What is the difference between a new reel and a Grade-A recycled reel?
New reels ship from the manufacturer with pristine flange construction, published species and moisture spec, and new flange marking. Grade-A recycled reels have been through 5-30 cycles, are refurbished to full structural capacity, and have slight cosmetic wear. For first-run new cable programs or export shipments, buy new. For returnable pool programs or internal distribution, Grade-A recycled.
Does CME lumber futures affect wood reel pricing?
Yes - new-build wood reels follow the same lumber-index pass-through pattern as pallets. A 15% CME futures move translates to a 7-10% new-reel pricing move within 2-4 weeks. Grade-A recycled reels are less sensitive to lumber futures (the recycled reel exists already).
What is the typical lead time for a new 60-inch flange reel?
For standard NEMA WC 26 sizes: 1-5 business days from PO for stock, same-day in Florida for pre-staged inventory. For custom traverse or specialty flange marking: 5-10 business days from drawing approval.
How much does ISPM-15 stamping add to a wood reel?
$0.50-$2.00 per linear foot of flange (varies by treatment-batch size). For a 60-inch flange reel, that is roughly $8-$16 added. For export shipments ISPM-15 is required.
Can you supply reels for FPL post-hurricane restoration pricing?
Yes - FPL has a published pool spec for restoration reels. We stock pool-matched Grade-A recycled reels at the Central Florida yard with pre-staged inventory for hurricane-season dispatch. Program pricing available for FPL and major Florida municipal utilities.
What is the environmental impact of wood vs plastic cable reels?
Wood reels are renewable, biodegradable, and locally sourced. Plastic reels are petroleum-derived with longer cycle life. For 50+ cycle returnable programs, plastic has lower per-cycle environmental impact. For one-way programs, wood has lower impact.
How do you handle flange marking and bolt pattern for pool spec match?
Send us a current pool reel or the published pool-spec drawing. We match flange marking exactly, bolt pattern exactly, and head-plate thickness exactly so empty reels return cleanly into your pool.
What is the capacity of a 60-inch wood cable reel?
A 60-inch flange with 22-26-inch drum and 24-36-inch traverse typically carries 2,500-4,000 lb of utility cable depending on cable gauge. For specific cable load capacity we quote per spec.
Can wood reels be shipped internationally?
Yes - ISPM-15 heat-treated and IPPC-stamped wood reels ship worldwide. For Latin American (Jaxport) and Caribbean (Port Miami, Port Everglades) export we provide bilingual documentation on request. For Asian export (via Pacific ports) we partner with freight forwarders for ocean-container stuffing.
