Wooden skid pricing by load class
Wooden skid pricing scales with load capacity, cross-section of runners, and overall footprint. Published commercial-buyer ranges below reflect mid-volume orders (10-100 skids). Spot one-off orders run higher per unit; standing programs run lower.
A light-duty skid (up to 5,000 lb load, 48x48 to 48x96 footprint, 2x4 or 2x6 runners) runs $35 to $80 per skid delivered. A medium-duty skid (5,000-15,000 lb, 60x60 to 72x120, 4x4 or 4x6 runners) runs $90 to $220. A heavy-duty skid (15,000-60,000 lb, 72x96 to 120x240, 6x6 or 8x8 runners) runs $280 to $750. Project cargo skids (60,000+ lb, engineered drawing, 10x10 or 12x12 or steel-reinforced) are quoted per drawing.
For ISPM-15 export skids (any grade), add $0.50 to $2.00 per square foot of deck area for heat-treatment and IPPC stamping. For four-way entry notched runners (optional feature for flexible fork approach), add 15-25% to base skid price.
What drives wooden skid pricing
Load capacity
The dominant cost driver. A heavy-duty 6x6 runner uses 2.25x the lumber of a 4x4 runner and typically specifies Douglas fir (not Southern yellow pine) for strength-to-weight. Project cargo with 10x10 runners uses 2.78x the lumber of 6x6.
Overall footprint
A 48x48 skid vs a 72x120 skid uses roughly 3x the deck lumber. For custom-engineered project cargo at 120x240, the lumber volume quadruples again.
Deck construction
1x6 top deck is the standard light-duty finish. 2x6 is medium-duty. 3x8 and 4x8 planks are heavy-duty and project cargo. Deck plank thickness and spacing drive both material cost and labor.
Species
Southern yellow pine is standard for most skid applications and ISPM-15 export. Douglas fir is heavy-duty-standard and adds 15-25% premium. Oak and hardwood runs 2-3x for high-abuse applications (feed truck beds, agricultural equipment decks).
Custom features
Four-way entry notched runners: add 15-25%. Steel strapping across top deck: add $12-$30. Foam-faced top deck for scratch-sensitive cargo (electronics, medical, precision machined parts): add $25-$95 depending on size. Lifting lugs and tie-down points (steel inserts): add $35-$120. Protective shrink-wrap for outdoor exposure: add $8-$20.
Space Coast and specialty engineered-drawing project cargo skid pricing
For engineered-drawing project cargo (NASA, SpaceX, ULA, Blue Origin, utility transformer, generator, mining equipment, wind-turbine component bases), pricing is quoted per drawing. Typical ranges for engineered skids: $800-$5,500 depending on size, documentation, and specialty features (foam-faced decks, calculated lifting lugs, MIL-STD-129 marking, NQA-1 documentation).
For NASA Kennedy, Cape Canaveral Space Force, and SpaceX launch-vehicle component skids: lead time 10-25 business days from drawing approval. For utility transformer skids (FPL, Duke, JEA, OUC): lead time 3-10 business days from spec approval.
How we quote wooden skids
Send us equipment weight (max per skid), skid footprint needed (length x width), ship-to state, quantity (one-time or standing weekly), and any special requirements (four-way entry, foam-faced deck, ISPM-15 export, mil-spec documentation, lifting lugs). For Space Coast engineered-drawing project cargo send us the drawing. Standard reply same business day for published grades; 1-3 business days for engineered-drawing project cargo quotes.

How much does a 48x48 wooden skid cost in 2026?
A light-duty 48x48 skid rated to 5,000 lb runs $35-$80 delivered in volume. For a medium-duty 48x48 (5-15k lb load) with 4x4 runners, $90-$160. For heavy-duty 48x48 (15-60k lb) with 6x6 runners, $280-$450.
When should I use a skid instead of a pallet?
Use a pallet for loads under 2,500 lb that cycle through racking and distribution. Use a skid for single-piece heavy loads above 5,000 lb, oversized cargo, or one-way heavy equipment transport. The 2,500-5,000 lb range is a judgment call - see our skid-vs-pallet comparison guide.
What is the typical lead time for a transformer skid?
For FPL / Duke Energy / major Florida utility published pool spec: 1-3 business days. For custom-engineered transformer skid: 5-15 business days from drawing approval. For emergency storm response we expedite with pre-staged inventory in Florida during hurricane season.
Can you build Space Coast engineered-drawing skids?
Yes - we work with NASA Kennedy, Cape Canaveral Space Force, SpaceX Launch Operations, ULA, and Blue Origin on engineered-drawing skids with full documentation chain, foam-faced decks, calculated lifting lugs with tested capacity, and MIL-STD-129 marking per PO specification. Lead time 10-25 business days from drawing approval.
Do four-way entry skids cost more than two-way?
Yes - 15-25% more. The notch cut reduces runner cross-section at the notch, which the runner must be upsized to compensate for. For skids that will move through tight-space handling (hard-to-approach distribution zones) the four-way entry pays off.
What is the maximum size wooden skid you build?
For published grades, up to 120x240 inches (10x20 ft). For engineered-drawing project cargo we have built up to 240x480 inches (20x40 ft) with laminated timber and steel reinforcement. The practical upper limit at that size is highway transport (12-ft permit width) and loading-dock geometry.
Do you supply skids for NQA-1 nuclear-grade shipping?
Yes - for nuclear-grade requirements we build with materials certification, lot traceability, fastener-schedule compliance, and third-party inspection availability per NQA-1 specification. Lead time 15-25 days from PO due to documentation preparation.
Can skids be returnable in a program?
Heavy-duty and project cargo skids are often returnable in closed-loop OEM-to-customer programs. We quote return-and-reuse economics on request. Light-duty skids are typically one-way (cost of recovery exceeds material value).
How does CME lumber futures affect skid pricing?
Standard-grade skids follow CME softwood lumber front-month contract closely. Heavy-timber Douglas fir skids are less sensitive to CME softwood futures and more sensitive to West Coast fir supply. Engineered-drawing project cargo skids with specialty features are less sensitive to lumber index moves.
What is the typical shrink-wrap option for outdoor-exposed skids?
For skids staged outdoor for 60+ days we recommend protective shrink-wrap over the deck surface (removable at destination without damage to equipment). Adds $8-$20 per skid. For salt-air coastal exposure consider pressure-treated construction.
