Aerospace AS9100 Pallet Packaging 2026
Aerospace supply chain (Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, SpaceX, GE Aviation, Pratt & Whitney) requires AS9100-certified pallet suppliers with MIL-STD-2073 Method 40 or 50 packaging documentation, IUID (Item Unique Identification) markings, IPPC-accredited kiln facilities for ISPM-15 international transit, and per-part dimensional accuracy +/- 0.125" for engine crates, avionics dunnage, and airframe subassembly platforms.

AS9100 supplier certification framework
AS9100 is the aerospace quality management standard, extended from ISO 9001 to include specific aerospace-industry requirements. Pallet + packaging suppliers to aerospace primes (Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, GE Aviation, Pratt & Whitney, Airbus North America) must maintain AS9100 certification + demonstrate: (a) per-part dimensional accuracy verified with certified measurement tools, (b) lot-traceability from lumber source to delivery, (c) documented non-conformance handling process, (d) supplier corrective action + preventive action (SCAR/PAR) records, (e) periodic audit by prime's Supplier Quality Assurance team.
MIL-STD-2073 packaging methods
MIL-STD-2073 defines packaging requirements for military + defense equipment. Two methods commonly apply to aerospace pallets:
- Method 40 (Preservation Method): for items requiring extended storage protection. Includes specific dunnage + barrier material specs + moisture-vapor-transmission requirements.
- Method 50 (Water Vapor-Proof Preservation): highest protection level, for items requiring vapor-tight barrier during transit + storage. Custom pallets designed to integrate with vapor-barrier bags + desiccant packets.
Both methods require documented compliance per shipment, IUID marking of each pallet with unique identifier tracked to the DoD/GS1 IUID registry, and integration with buyer's ERP/PLM system for traceability.
ISPM-15 for aerospace international transit
Aerospace subassemblies + engines cross international borders constantly - Boeing 787 fuselage from Italy/Japan/UK to Charleston SC, Airbus A320 wing panels between Mobile AL + Toulouse France, Rolls-Royce engine components between Derby UK + Indianapolis US + Singapore, GE Aviation composites between multiple US + international sites. Every pallet crossing an international border must carry a verifiable IPPC stamp from an ALSC-accredited kiln facility.
Named aerospace primes USP serves
- Boeing: Charleston SC (787 final assembly), Ridley Park PA (V-22 Osprey + Chinook), Everett WA (747 + 767 + 777), Renton WA (737 MAX)
- Lockheed Martin: Fort Worth TX (F-35 final assembly), Marietta GA (F-22 + C-130), Palmdale CA (Skunk Works), Owego + Syracuse NY, Littleton CO (Space Systems)
- Northrop Grumman: Bethpage NY + Melville NY + Woodbury NY (B-21 Raider + Grumman legacy), Redondo Beach CA + El Segundo CA + Palmdale CA, Baltimore MD + Linthicum MD (Aegis + missile defense)
- Raytheon: Tucson AZ (missile production), Waltham MA + Andover MA + Marlborough MA, El Segundo CA + Fullerton CA
- SpaceX: Hawthorne CA HQ, Boca Chica TX (Starship + Super Heavy), Cape Canaveral FL, Vandenberg CA
- GE Aviation: Evendale/Cincinnati OH HQ, Peebles OH, Auburn AL, Greenville SC, Erlanger + Madisonville KY, Rutland VT
- Pratt & Whitney: East Hartford CT + Middletown CT (F-35 + commercial engines), North Berwick ME (engine components)
