Cold-Chain Pallet Requirements 2026
Cold-chain pallets must withstand temperature ranges from -80C (ultra-cold gene therapy + mRNA vaccine) through -20C (frozen food + mRNA storage) through 2-8C (biologics + fresh food) without splintering, warping, or moisture-absorbing beyond spec. Requires kiln-dried lumber, cGMP-compliant finish for pharma, and FSMA 204 traceability for food.

Cold-chain temperature ranges + pallet requirements
| Temperature range | Applications | Pallet requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Room temp (15-25C) | Non-refrigerated pharma + shelf-stable food | Standard GMA + FSMA 204 for food (grocery-adjacent SKUs) |
| Chilled 2-8C | Biologics, insulin, blood products, fresh food, dairy | Kiln-dried lumber <19% moisture, non-splintering, cGMP-compliant for pharma |
| Frozen -20C | Frozen food, mRNA vaccine storage, some biologics | Kiln-dried + moisture-tested, no wet-lumber substitution, spec-lock inventory dedicated to cold-chain |
| Ultra-cold -70C to -80C | mRNA vaccines, gene therapy, cell therapy | Specialized dry-ice-compatible design, no adhesive-based lamination (adhesive fails at -70C), engineered for repeated thermal cycling |
| Cryo -150C to -196C | Cryogenic biological samples, LN2-cooled shipping | Custom-engineered with cryogenic-compatible fasteners + no organic adhesives |
Moisture management in cold-chain pallets
Wood is hygroscopic - it absorbs + releases moisture with ambient humidity. In cold-chain applications, moisture cycling causes: (a) dimensional swelling that stresses fasteners + causes joint failure; (b) frost formation on surface that creates slip hazards + contaminates cleanroom environments; (c) mold + microbial growth that fails FDA + cGMP audits.
USP cold-chain pallets are kiln-dried to <19% moisture content and stored in humidity-controlled facilities prior to shipment. Buyers with cGMP requirements get moisture-tested batches with documented moisture content per pallet lot.
cGMP + FDA FSMA 204 requirements for cold-chain pallets
Pharmaceutical cold-chain (cGMP): New lumber only, no chemical treatment other than heat (ISPM-15), ISO Class 8 cleanroom-compatible finish (low-particulate, no residual sawdust), FDA-registered supplier preferred, dedicated QA-signed audit trail per pallet lot, chain-of-custody records from mill to buyer.
Food cold-chain (FSMA 204): Effective January 2026, requires enhanced traceability for foods on FDA's Food Traceability List. Applies to pallets carrying leafy greens, fresh + shell eggs, cheeses, cucumbers, herbs, melons, peppers, sprouts, tomatoes, tropical tree fruits, deli salads, seafood. Pallet-level lot traceability required from source to receiving. USP provides FSMA 204-compatible documentation on all cold-chain food-industry loads.
