A diesel forklift is an internal combustion lift truck powered by a diesel engine. In the industry classification used in the US, most fall in the internal combustion classes with cushion or pneumatic tires, and they are common in lumber yards, pallet yards, building supply, ports and outdoor storage. They suit long shifts and heavy lifting but produce exhaust, so indoor use needs adequate ventilation. Rough terrain forklifts are a separate class, though many of them are also diesel powered.
Diesel trucks are usually chosen for outdoor work on paved or packed yards, for loading flatbeds, and for moving heavy items such as lumber bundles, stacks of pallets and steel. Refueling is quick, so a truck can run through several shifts without waiting for a battery to charge.
They are a poor fit for enclosed warehouses, food storage areas and cold rooms because of exhaust, noise and odor. Buildings that run diesel trucks indoors need ventilation and air monitoring, and many food and pharmaceutical customers restrict internal combustion equipment around product. In those settings an electric forklift is usually the better choice.
Check the rated capacity plate for the attachment and load center actually in use.
It can, but only where ventilation keeps exhaust gases and particulates at safe levels, and where the site rules and customers allow it. Many warehouses ban diesel trucks indoors, and food or pharmaceutical facilities often restrict them near product. If a diesel truck must work inside, measure air quality, keep the engine well maintained, limit idling, and consider whether an electric or LP gas truck would be a better fit.
Diesel describes the engine. Rough terrain describes the truck design: large pneumatic tires, high ground clearance and often four wheel drive for unpaved ground such as construction sites and lumber yards. Many rough terrain forklifts run on diesel, but a standard diesel counterbalanced forklift is built for paved or firm surfaces and should not be driven on rough ground it was not designed for.
