What Is Rack Utilization?

Rack utilization is the percentage of available pallet rack positions that are occupied at a given time. United States Pallets supplies new, recycled, custom, and ISPM-15 heat-treated pallets to commercial buyers in all 50 states, with a 50-pallet minimum order and a written quote target of under 2 business hours.

Rack utilization is the percentage of available pallet rack positions that are occupied at a given time. It is calculated as occupied positions divided by total usable positions. It shows how full storage is, but a rack system becomes hard to operate well before it reaches 100 percent.

Calculating it

Count usable positions by location type, since a full building can still have empty positions in the wrong size or level. Some sites also measure cube utilization, how much of each position's volume a load fills, because a short load in a tall opening wastes space even when the position counts as occupied.

Why practical capacity is lower

Putaway needs open slots near where product belongs, receiving surges need space, and rearranging stock takes labor. Many operators treat a figure somewhat below full, often cited in the 80 to 90 percent range, as practical capacity, beyond which travel time and double handling rise. The right number depends on SKU mix and how dynamic the inventory is.

Pallets and rack ratings

Every position has a rated load from the rack design, shown on load plaques. Pallets must suit the beam spacing and, for wire-deck-free racks, have bottom boards that bridge the beams safely. See rack load application and beam deflection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good rack utilization rate?

There is no single target, but many operations aim to stay below full so they can put away and reorganize efficiently, with figures in the 80 to 90 percent range commonly cited as a practical ceiling. Sites with many SKUs, frequent receipts or strict location rules usually need more open slots than sites storing a few fast-moving items in bulk.

Does high rack utilization mean I need more space?

Not necessarily. Positions may be held by slow or obsolete stock, loads may be undersized for their openings, or beam levels may not match current pallet heights. Reviewing velocity, removing dead stock and re-profiling beam heights can free capacity. If utilization stays high after that, additional rack, denser storage or more space may be needed.
