FSMA Section 204 Overview

FDA Traceability Rule (21 CFR 1.1300-1.1495) effective Jan 20, 2026. Requires lot-level traceability for FDA Traceability List items: leafy greens, melons, peppers, sprouts, tomatoes, tropical fruits, herbs, finfish, crustaceans, mollusks, ready-to-eat deli salads, soft cheeses, certain shell eggs.

Pallet Supplier Role

Pallet supplier must provide GS1 SSCC barcoding capability, FSMA Sanitary Transportation alignment, kiln-drying validation, and audit-ready documentation. USP delivers all four.

GS1 SSCC Implementation

GS1 Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC): 18-digit unique pallet identifier. Encoded in GS1-128 barcode. Linked to lot/batch records in customer ERP.

Documentation Required

Per pallet: SSCC barcode, originator company prefix (CIN), lot number, harvest date (for produce), receiver SSCC tracking. Retention: 24 months minimum.
