Lumber Grade Requirements

  • No. 2 (standard): defects within tolerance, dominant pallet grade
  • No. 3 (economy): more defects allowed, used for budget pallets and Grade B/C repair
  • No. 1 (premium): fewer defects, used for specialty applications and exports requiring tight tolerance

Grading agencies: PLIB (Pacific softwoods), SPIB (Southern Yellow Pine), HPVA (hardwoods), all under ALSC accreditation.

Fastener Pattern Specifications

  • Top deck: 6-8 nails per stringer crossing point
  • Bottom deck: 4-6 nails per stringer crossing point
  • Total fasteners: approximately 84 nails per GMA pallet
  • Nail type: helically threaded preferred (max holding), plain shank acceptable
  • Nail length: 2-3/8" for 5/8" deck boards
  • Nail diameter: .120 inch typical

Repair Specifications

Permitted repairs (qualifies pallet as Grade B):

  1. Replace broken stringer with same-grade lumber
  2. Replace missing or broken deck board
  3. Replace missing fasteners
  4. Trim protruding nails
  5. Re-secure loose components
