What is a wood bin?
A wood bin, also called a bulk wood bin, is a reusable wooden container typically 30 to 48 inches on each horizontal side and 20 to 48 inches tall, with solid walls and either an open top or a lidded top. The bin sits on fork-truck entry points (either integrated runners or a separate pallet base) and holds bulk product in reusable, stackable, inventory-tracked containers.
Bulk wood bins are the workhorse of several industries: beverage (apple and grape bins for juice processing, cannabis buds and trim), cannabis (bulk cured product in curing rooms and processing floors), agriculture (potato bins, onion bins, root crop handling), parts (returnable automotive and heavy equipment parts bins), and specialty industrial (anywhere plastic totes are too expensive and corrugated is too flimsy).
The appeal of a wood bin is cycle life. A plastic tote is $150 to $400 per unit and lasts 300 to 1,000 cycles. A wood bin is $75 to $220 per unit and lasts 50 to 300 cycles. For high-cycle environments plastic wins; for mid-cycle and heavy-industrial environments wood is the better cost-per-cycle. A wood bin is also field-repairable with a hammer and nails, which plastic is not.
Wood bin sizes and grades
Standard 48 x 40 bin (GMA pallet footprint)
The most common size: 48 inches by 40 inches outside, 44 inches by 36 inches inside, 32 to 42 inches tall. Capacity is 20 to 35 cubic feet depending on height. Built from 1-by-6 or 2-by-6 side-walls on integrated 4-by-4 runners. Price band $65 to $140.
Beverage and juice bins (apple bins)
Apple bins (used by the apple juice industry and now by cannabis) are 48 inches by 48 inches by 30 to 36 inches tall. Built heavier - 2-by-6 side-walls, reinforced corners, integrated runners. Capacity around 20 to 25 bushels of apples (900 to 1,000 pounds). Price band $85 to $165.
Cannabis bulk bins
For cannabis cure, trim, and bulk processing we supply custom-sized wood bins with food-safe interior finishes, pest-resistant construction, and lid options. Common sizes are 36 inches by 36 inches by 24 inches up to 48 inches by 48 inches by 36 inches. Pricing is quoted per spec.
Root crop and potato bins
Potato and onion bins run 48 inches by 48 inches by 24 to 36 inches, with ventilated side-walls to allow airflow during cold storage. Built for 1,000 to 2,000 pound capacity.
Returnable parts bins
For automotive and heavy equipment parts, we build custom returnable bins 24 to 48 inches each side, with foam-faced interior for scratch-sensitive parts, lid options, and brand marking per customer spec.
Food-safe and cannabis-compliant construction
Food-contact and cannabis-contact wood bins require specific construction: species choice (typically hardwood or specific softwood avoiding resinous species), interior sealant (food-safe polyurethane or mineral oil), heat-treatment and pest-resistance (ISPM-15 standard or beyond), and no treated-wood components (no CCA, no copper azole, no borate on food-contact surfaces).
For cannabis facilities we build to state-specific metrc-compliance where applicable, including bar-code or RFID marking on each bin for inventory tracking. For beverage and juice facilities we build to FDA food-contact standards for incidental contact wood.
Returnable bin programs and cycle economics
A returnable bin program has three cost components: the one-time bin inventory purchase, the per-cycle wear and repair cost, and the lane freight for empty return. The bin inventory is sized for 1.5 to 2.5 times the number of outbound shipments in the float window.
Per-cycle wear on a wood bin is typically 2 to 6 percent of inventory per 100 cycles - meaning a 1,000-bin fleet replaces 20 to 60 bins per 100 cycles due to damage. We supply replacement bins at per-unit pricing and offer in-field repair services for larger fleets.
The breakeven against single-use shipping (plastic totes rented, or corrugated boxes consumed) is typically 15 to 50 cycles. For high-cycle lanes between committed partners, wood bins are the clear economic winner.
What to send us for a bin quote
Send us: application (beverage, cannabis, parts, root crop, specialty), the pallet footprint you want to match (48x40 standard, 48x48, or custom), the capacity (cubic feet or pounds per bin), the cycle environment (indoor dry, cold-storage, outdoor exposed), any food-safe or cannabis-compliance requirements, and the lane and volume (fleet size, outbound shipments per week). Standard reply same business day; custom-spec programs quoted on 5 to 10 day lead for first delivery.

Frequently asked questions
Are wood bins better than plastic totes?
For high-cycle environments (above 300 cycles per bin per year) plastic totes win on cost-per-cycle. For mid-cycle and heavy-industrial environments (50 to 300 cycles per year) wood bins win on initial cost and total cost-per-cycle. Wood bins are also field-repairable, which plastic is not. Many facilities run both: plastic for cleanroom and high-cycle lanes, wood for industrial and seasonal lanes.
Can wood bins hold food-contact product?
Yes - with specific construction. Food-contact wood bins use food-safe species, food-safe interior sealant, no treated-wood components, and heat-treatment compliance. For FDA incidental food-contact we build to standard. For direct-contact or wet food we recommend food-grade plastic liners inside the wood bin.
Do you supply cannabis-compliant wood bins?
Yes. For cannabis cure, trim, and bulk processing we build with food-safe interior finishes, pest-resistant construction, no treated-wood components, and (where state law requires) metrc-compliant RFID or bar-code marking. We work with each facility on state-specific compliance.
How long do wood bins last in cold-storage apple shipping?
Standard apple bins see 75 to 200 cycle life in cold-storage shipping, depending on handling and climate. Bins stored and shipped at refrigerator temperatures (34-38F) with moderate humidity see the longer end. Bins exposed to outdoor storage, direct rain, and freeze-thaw see the shorter end. Field repair extends life.
What is the typical bin inventory size for a returnable program?
Inventory is sized at 1.5 to 2.5 times the number of outbound shipments in the longest float window (bin-at-receiver time). For a shipper sending 100 bins per week with a 3-week float window, inventory would be around 450 to 750 bins. We quote inventory sizing with the first bid.
Can wood bins be stacked when full?
Yes - standard wood bins are built to stack 2 to 4 high when full. The practical limit is cargo weight and bin wall strength. For heavy loads (apple bins full of apples at 1,000 pounds) we recommend 2-high maximum when stacked. For light loads 3 or 4 high is fine.
Do you offer in-field repair services for existing bin fleets?
Yes - for fleets of 500+ bins we offer scheduled in-field repair at the customer facility, including corner repair, bottom-plank replacement, and runner repair. We also supply replacement components (replacement side walls, replacement runners, replacement lids) for in-house repair.
What is the lead time on a new wood bin program?
For published-size bins from stock: 3 to 10 business days from PO. For custom-sized or custom-spec bins: 10 to 25 business days from drawing approval. For full program setup (inventory, documentation, labeling, first delivery): 20 to 45 days from first quote.
Can wood bins be shipped internationally?
Yes - any wood bin crossing international borders carries ISPM-15 heat-treat and IPPC stamp. For intra-continental US-Canada-Mexico shipping, same ISPM-15 rules apply. For overseas shipping (EU, Asia, Latin America) ISPM-15 is universal.
How do wood bins compare to drums or barrels for bulk shipping?
Drums and barrels (plastic or steel) are better for liquid or hazardous-materials bulk shipping. Wood bins are better for solid bulk product (produce, parts, dry commodities). For most food, cannabis, and industrial-parts applications, wood bins outperform drums on cost, handling, and cleanability.
