What is a wood spool (cable reel)?
A wood spool, also called a wood cable reel, is a two-flange cylinder-and-drum assembly built from sawn hardwood or plywood that holds coiled wire, cable, rope, hose, fiber, or tubing for ship, pay-out, and re-use. The two circular flanges (the heads) ride the ground when the spool rolls; the drum (the barrel) carries the wind. Companies specify spools by three numbers: flange diameter, drum diameter, and traverse (the inside width between flanges).
Utilities, telecom, fiber contractors, and electrical wholesalers consume wood spools in volume because the geometry pays itself off. A wood spool rolls on its own flanges, lifts with a shaft-and-forks or an under-mount lifter, and ships cable in a shape that pays off cleanly from a trailer, a trench, or a cable plow without re-coiling. Returnable spool programs are standard: the empty reel goes back to the manufacturer or to a reel pool for credit.
Steel reels and plastic reels exist, but wood dominates the mid-size and heavy end because wood is cheaper per cubic foot of cable payload, is repairable in the field, is ISPM-15 compliant for export, and takes a nail or a staple without special tooling. Wood spools are shipped new for first-run cable programs and recycled for internal repeat-shipment pools.
Wood spool sizes we stock and build to spec
United States Pallets supplies wood spools in the full NEMA WC 26 size range plus custom builds. A 20-inch to 30-inch spool handles romex, service drop, and small coaxial. A 36-inch to 48-inch spool handles underground residential distribution (URD) and medium-gauge fiber. A 60-inch to 72-inch spool handles transmission conductor, armored cable, and bulk fiber bundle. 84-inch to 96-inch wood spools handle utility-grade primary distribution and submarine-adjacent cable.
For large one-off orders - new build of a utility substation, a solar farm trench run, a fiber-to-the-home buildout - we quote custom traverse and custom drum diameter. For returnable pool programs, we match an existing reel spec exactly, including flange marking, bolt pattern, and head-plate thickness, so the empties flow back into your pool without an audit flag.

When to buy a new wood spool vs a recycled wood spool
Buy new wood spools for first-run cable that leaves your yard with a cable manufacturer's brand on it, for export shipments that need ISPM-15 heat-treat stamping, and for high-value runs where a splinter or a damaged flange would risk cable sheath damage. New spools come in with clean flanges, a published species and moisture spec, and the capacity to carry name-plated capacity ratings.
Buy recycled wood spools for internal repeat-shipment loops, construction job-site cable rotation, and any program where the spool returns to a pool rather than ships one-way. Grade-A recycled spools are structurally intact with full flange faces and come at 40 to 60 percent of new-build price. Grade-B spools are repaired or re-faced and are suited to internal, non-customer-facing moves.
A durable program will mix: new spools for brand-facing or export shipments, Grade-A recycled for repeat domestic customers, and Grade-B for internal cable movements. We quote the mix and the swap-cycle economics on request.
ISPM-15 export-stamped wood spools
Wood spools cross international borders constantly - fiber bundles for an overseas data center, mining cable for a Chilean copper operation, transformer secondary cable into Mexico or Canada. All of them require ISPM-15 heat treatment and an IPPC stamp on the flange, visible from both sides, branded (not painted, not stickered) into the wood. United States Pallets ISPM-15 stamps every export spool at an APHIS-registered facility and documents the heat-treatment cycle on the delivery paperwork.
If a non-stamped wood spool arrives at a port of entry, customs holds the shipment, charges a fumigation or re-export fee, and in many cases destroys the wood component on the spot. The cable payload is at risk. We treat ISPM-15 as a hard requirement, not a line item.
Returnable spool programs and pool economics
A returnable spool program is the standard for utility cable and telecom fiber at national scale. The reel is a credit on the cable invoice - the buyer returns it (empty, cleaned, no missing fasteners) within a published window (90 days, 180 days, 1 year) and the credit is applied. If the reel is not returned, the credit is forfeited and the buyer pays for the reel outright.
Pool spool programs expand this: a pool operator (a utility, a fiber co-op, a cable manufacturer) owns a float of several thousand reels. The reels circulate among contractors. The pool pays for repairs and replacements out of a per-cycle fee. United States Pallets supplies pool reels, pool-repair reels, and new reels for pool growth. We can match any pool spec, including flange marking, bolt pattern, and head-plate thickness.
What a quote on wood spools looks like
Send us flange diameter, drum diameter, traverse, and species preference (pine, Douglas fir, Southern yellow pine) along with your ship-to state and the quantity (one-time or weekly). We quote per reel delivered, plus any ISPM-15 or IPPC stamping if the destination is international. For returnable programs we quote the per-reel buy price and the per-reel pool fee.
Our standard reply is same business day. For urgent utility work (storm restoration, substation emergency build) we move faster - 24 to 48 hours from quote to a loaded trailer out of a regional yard.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a wood spool and a plastic reel?
Wood spools cost 30 to 50 percent less than plastic reels at the mid and heavy end (36-inch flange and up), are repairable in the field with standard carpentry, carry an ISPM-15 stamp for international shipment, and take fasteners for cable tie-down without special inserts. Plastic reels dominate the small-cable, high-cycle, indoor-only end (telecom patch cable, instrument cable, lab wire).
Can I ship a wood spool overseas without an ISPM-15 stamp?
No. Any wood packaging crossing international borders (except within the US, Canada, and a few other exempt pairs) must be heat-treated and stamped under ISPM-15. An unstamped wood spool is held at customs, often fumigated or destroyed, and the cable payload is at risk. We stamp every export spool at an APHIS-registered facility.
How do you quote returnable spool programs?
We quote two numbers: the per-reel buy price (what you pay today) and the per-reel return credit (what you recover when the empty reel comes back within the published window). For pool programs we also quote per-reel pool fee and repair/replacement economics. Send us the number of annual cable moves, your current pool size, and your return-rate history.
What is the typical lead time on new wood spools?
For standard NEMA WC 26 sizes we ship from stock in 1 to 3 business days. For custom traverse or custom drum diameter we quote 5 to 10 business days from drawing approval. For urgent utility work (storm restoration) we move faster with yard-direct pickup.
What species do you build wood spools from?
Primary species are Southern yellow pine, Douglas fir, and plantation pine for ISPM-15 stamping. We quote hardwood (oak, maple) for high-abuse applications. All species are kiln-dried to the moisture content required by ISPM-15 (around 20 percent at the time of treatment).
Do you supply the flange marking and bolt pattern for our pool?
Yes. For returnable pool programs we match your existing pool spec exactly, including flange marking, bolt pattern, head-plate thickness, and barrel-stave construction. Send us a current reel for reference and we quote to that spec.
Can wood spools carry an IPPC stamp for Canada or Mexico?
Yes. Our APHIS-registered facility stamps IPPC with the US country code (US), facility number, HT treatment code, and the IPPC wheat-stalk logo. The stamp is accepted by Canada, Mexico, and all other ISPM-15 signatory countries.
What is the weight capacity of a 60-inch wood spool?
A 60-inch flange wood spool with a 24-inch drum and 36-inch traverse typically carries 2,500 to 4,000 pounds of cable depending on construction grade and flange thickness. We publish load capacity per spool spec on request.
Do you buy back empty wood spools?
Yes, for programs we quote. We also take empty spool fleets off the books for utilities and contractors who have accumulated reels and need yard space. Email us a photo and count.
How are wood spools delivered?
By flatbed, dry van, or step-deck depending on quantity and flange diameter. Small spools (up to 36-inch flange) load on dry vans. Large spools (60-inch flange and up) ship on flatbeds with proper strapping and corner protection. We quote freight to any US destination.
