Order fulfillment covers every step between a customer placing an order and receiving it: order capture and release, inventory allocation, picking, packing, building and wrapping pallets where needed, labeling, loading and shipping, and often returns. In pallet-based operations it may mean shipping full pallets straight from storage, building mixed pallets from case or split case picks, or cross-docking inbound pallets. Fulfillment can be run in-house or outsourced to a 3PL.
Pallets enter fulfillment at several points. Receiving checks inbound pallets and puts them away. Replenishment moves full pallets from reserve storage to pick locations. Shipping builds outbound loads, and for mixed orders that means a pallet build stable enough to survive the trip, followed by stretch wrap and labels. Every step depends on pallets that fit the racks, conveyors and trucks in use.
Large retailers and distributors usually publish routing guides or vendor compliance manuals that spell out how shipments must arrive. These often cover:
Missing a requirement can lead to refused loads or chargebacks, so work from each customer's current guide.
Running out of pallets stops shipping as surely as running out of product. Fulfillment operations should track pallet stock by type, keep rental pool pallets separate from owned pallets, and plan for the specific pallet each customer requires. Damaged pallets pulled from the line need a set place to go so they do not end up under outbound loads.
Warehousing is the storage function: receiving goods, putting them away, holding them and keeping inventory accurate. Order fulfillment is the process of turning a customer order into a delivered shipment, which uses the warehouse but also includes order processing, picking, packing, shipping and often returns. A storage-only facility may hold pallets for months with little picking, while a fulfillment operation is judged on speed and accuracy.
Pallets carry the labels and the build that receivers check. A mixed pallet with poorly stacked cases, missing labels or the wrong footprint can be refused, or slow down receiving, even if every item on it is correct. Consistent pallet quality also keeps conveyors, racks and automated equipment running. Many operations inspect outbound pallets for build, wrap and labeling before loading for this reason.
