The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) is a North American forest certification program run by an independent non-profit organization. It publishes separate standards for forest management, fiber sourcing and chain of custody, and certified organizations are audited by accredited third-party certification bodies. SFI is endorsed by PEFC, the international umbrella for national certification schemes. For pallet buyers, SFI is mainly a way to document that the wood in a pallet came from certified or responsibly sourced forests, alongside or instead of FSC.
SFI standards that touch pallet wood
- Forest management: applies to landowners and covers practices such as regeneration, water quality, biodiversity and harvest planning.
- Fiber sourcing: applies to organizations that buy wood, including from land that is not itself certified, and addresses responsible procurement.
- Chain of custody: tracks certified content as wood moves from forest to mill to manufacturer, so a product claim can be backed up.
Making an SFI claim on a pallet
A pallet can only be sold with an SFI claim if the pallet maker holds its own chain-of-custody certificate and buys wood with valid SFI claims from its suppliers. Buying lumber from a certified mill is not enough on its own. When a customer asks for SFI pallets, ask the supplier for the certificate number, check that it is current with the certification body or SFI's online listing, and make sure the claim appears on the invoice.
SFI or FSC: which does a buyer need?
Both are third-party audited programs, but they are separate systems with different rules and labels. Some customers specify one, some accept either, and some also accept other PEFC-endorsed schemes. Read the customer's sourcing policy before ordering, since an SFI claim will not satisfy a contract that requires FSC chain of custody.

ISPM 15 is a phytosanitary standard that requires approved treatment, such as heat treatment, and a specific mark for wood packaging moving in international trade. A pallet can be SFI-certified, ISPM 15 compliant, both, or neither, so specify each requirement separately when you order export pallets.
