Detailed Definition

Sustainable forest management (SFM) means managing forests to meet present needs for timber and other products while keeping their long-term health, biodiversity, soil and water quality, and ability to regrow. In the US, the Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis program tracks forest area, growth and removals over time. Independent certification programs such as FSC, SFI and PEFC turn SFM principles into auditable standards for forest owners and chain-of-custody rules for the companies that buy and process wood.

What SFM covers in practice

How SFM reaches a pallet

A pallet can only carry a certified claim if every link in the chain is covered: a certified forest, a mill with chain-of-custody certification, and a pallet maker with its own chain-of-custody certificate. Much pallet wood comes from legally harvested but uncertified sources, which is not the same as unsustainable, but it cannot be sold with a certification claim. Reusing and repairing pallets is a separate way to cut wood use per shipment.

What buyers should ask

Ask which certification, if any, the supplier holds, the certificate number, and what claim will appear on the invoice. Check that the certificate is current. If your goal is lower environmental impact rather than a specific label, also consider recycled pallets, pooling, and right-sizing designs, and compare options with a lifecycle assessment where the decision is large.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is all US lumber from sustainably managed forests?

Not in the sense of being certified. A share of US forest land is certified under FSC, SFI or American Tree Farm System standards, and much is not. Uncertified wood can still be legally harvested under state forestry rules and best management practices. Separately, the US Lacey Act prohibits trade in illegally harvested timber. If you need proof of sustainable sourcing, ask for certified wood with a chain-of-custody claim.

Are recycled pallets better than certified new pallets?

They address different things. Certification shows that new wood came from responsibly managed forests. Recycled and repaired pallets reduce the need for new wood altogether by extending the life of existing material. Which is better for a given operation depends on the pallet's durability, how many trips it makes, transport distances and what happens at end of life. Customer policies may also require one or the other.
