Lifecycle assessment (LCA) quantifies the environmental impacts of a product across its life cycle, from raw material extraction through manufacture, transport, use and end of life. The method is set out in ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. For pallets, an LCA typically covers lumber harvest and sawing, manufacturing, transport, use and reuse trips, repair, and end-of-life recycling, grinding or disposal. Results can support ESG procurement decisions and carbon footprint claims, but depend heavily on assumptions such as trips per pallet and transport distances.
ISO 14040 describes four phases. Goal and scope definition sets the purpose, the functional unit and the system boundaries. Inventory analysis collects inputs and outputs such as energy, materials and emissions. Impact assessment converts the inventory into impact categories such as climate change. Interpretation checks results, sensitivity and limitations. For pallets the functional unit matters most: comparing one pallet with another is misleading if one makes far more trips, so studies often compare the impact of moving a set quantity of goods.
For many buyers, a pallet carbon footprint is the part of an LCA that procurement actually asks for. Ask whether the figures are for a generic pallet or for your supplier's own production and transport.
It depends on the assumptions. Results change with the number of trips each pallet makes, how often it is repaired, transport distances for returns, the energy used in manufacturing and how each pallet is handled at end of life. Studies have reached different conclusions for those reasons. Compare published LCAs only when their functional unit and boundaries match your own supply chain, and treat a single headline number with caution.
A carbon footprint looks at one impact category: greenhouse gas emissions, usually expressed in carbon dioxide equivalents. An LCA can cover many categories, such as water use, acidification and resource depletion, as well as climate change. A product carbon footprint is often calculated with LCA methods and may follow ISO 14067. If a buyer asks for an LCA, confirm whether they need the full study or only the climate results.
