A Grade A 48 x 40 typically has all deck boards and stringers intact, no protruding nails and a clean, uniform look, with few or no repairs. There is no national standard defining recycled pallet grades, so one supplier's Grade A can differ from another's. Grade A units are commonly used where appearance and consistency matter, such as retail and grocery shipments.
How Grade A differs from Grade B
The main differences are repairs and appearance. Grade B pallets have usually been repaired, for example with a replaced deck board or a reinforcing companion piece on a stringer, and may show mixed board colors. Grade A pallets have few or no visible repairs. Both should be structurally serviceable; the grade is mostly about looks and consistency, not a rated load.
Writing a Grade A specification
Because grades vary, buyers who care about quality should put the criteria in writing. Useful points include:
- Maximum number of repairs allowed, if any.
- Whether stringer plates or companion stringers are acceptable.
- No broken, split or missing boards and no protruding fasteners.
- Limits on stains, mold, oil and paint markings.
- Whether heat-treated stock with an ISPM-15 mark is required.
Then inspect a sample of each delivery against that list. A common mistake is ordering Grade A by name only and arguing about quality later.
Also confirm the footprint and construction. Grade describes condition, so a Grade A pallet can still be a two-way or block design if you do not specify a three-stringer, partial four-way 48 x 40.

Is a Grade A recycled pallet as strong as a new pallet?
It can be close, but not automatically. A recycled pallet may have different board thicknesses or species from the original design, and the wood has already been through handling and drying. For most standard loads a sound Grade A pallet performs well. If you rack heavy loads or need a rated capacity, use a design you can verify, and consider new pallets built to a known specification.
