Cores are used pallets collected for reuse that have not yet been sorted, repaired or resold. Recyclers and pallet yards collect cores from businesses, buy-back arrangements and distribution centers, then sort them by size and condition. Sound cores may be resold with little work, damaged ones are repaired, and those beyond repair are dismantled for parts or ground. Condition grades such as A and B are trade terms each recycler defines, not grades set by the NWPCA Uniform Standard or any other national standard.
How cores are sorted
Sorting usually starts with footprint, since 48x40 cores have the widest resale market, while odd sizes may go to particular customers or be dismantled. Within a size, pallets are separated by condition: ready to sell, minor repair, major repair and scrap. Rental pool pallets are pulled out for return to their owners.
